Preparator of Fabrication (Regular/Full-time)

The Preparator of Fabrication will prepare, install, maintain, and pack works of art at all museum-operated facilities with a focus on fabrication of museum casework, fixtures, and mounts.


Work Schedule:

·       Monday – Friday, 9am -5pm, with some nights and weekends required as needed.



·       Actively assist with the preparation, installation, maintenance, dismantling, and packing of permanent collection works of art, special exhibitions, loans, and implementing the acquisitions process.

·       Coordinate case schedule and planning for special exhibition requirements with Manager of Exhibitions and Exhibition Designer.

·       Work with Exhibition Designer in designing and fabricating museum casework and mounts.

·       Maintain Carpenter’s shop and equipment, art storage vaults and galleries

·       Design and fabricate museum quality crates for the transportation of works of art.

·       Review Gallery Changes and Preplists and troubleshoot any potential challenges or conflicts.

·       Complete local pick-ups and deliveries of works of art.

·       Conduct routine gallery checks and report changes in condition of installed artwork to Registrar’s office.

·       Assist with collections inventory and report location changes to the Registrar’s office, Coordinator of Collections and Exhibitions, and appropriate Curatorial Department.

·       Collaborate with visiting artist and museum professionals on assigned projects and exhibition related activities.

·       Assist with exhibition lighting design and maintenance of gallery lighting.

·       Assist Chief Preparator with organizing, inventory, maintenance, and purchasing of materials in all preparator areas. Develop cost-effective methods of working with vendors and contractors for purchase of related materials, supplies, and services.

·       Attend and participate in work schedule and other assigned meetings.

·       Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree in fine arts and experience in exhibition installation preferred.


Skills and Abilities:

·       Extensive knowledge and experience with carpentry tools and materials including painted finishes.

·       Ability to read and understand architectural renderings and floor plans.

·       Must be proficient in Microsoft Office – Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Access, Photoshop, and digital scanning programs.

·       Must be a team player, highly organized, detail oriented, able to prioritize and be flexible.


Communication Skills:

·       Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills using a variety of methods.

·       Ability to read and analyze business and financial reports.


Mathematical Skills:

·       Ability to read and understand measuring equipment.


Reasoning Abilities:

·       Must be able to solve practical problems and prioritize needs in a variety of situations where standardization is limited and immediate decisions may be necessary.
